Writing Resources

The Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators
Joining this organization is the best thing you can do for your writing career. Get involved, attend conferences, read The Bulletin, join or form a critique group, and you will be a children’s book professional before you know it.
SCBWI “Blue Boards”
For years, Verla Kay maintained a chatroom, message board, and community for children’s writers. Now a part of the SCBWI website, where you can find the information and support you need to keep motivated in the process of writing and illustrating for children and young adults.
Ernie Bond’s “Literature and the Young Adult Reader”
This is actually the online companion site to an amazingly detailed textbook that I do not own. But if anyone has a spare copy, I would love one.
Harold Underdown’s “Purple Crayon”
Harold wrote the book on publishing children’s books. (It’s called The Complete Idiot’s Publishing Children’s Books.) His site will become your go-to resource for information on everything from formatting to submitting.
Rachelle Burk’s Resources for Children’s Writers
If you’re looking for more links for writers, here’s the place to go!
